Why should my company have a website?
Websites are a sales gateway. They allow you to advertise your product and service to an unlimited amount of potential consumers. They can do anything from a simple advertising web page, to an in-depth help and support site. Websites can even be a point of sale, or a business in it’s self. And since websites are accessible from just about anyone over the internet, you could sell your product to just about anyone, even if they are from the other side of the globe! How often should I update my website? Generally, it is best to add new content to your website each week. This is to increase the “activeness” of your website so that you have a higher chance of having your website displayed in the top 10 links on search engines like Bing, Yahoo and Google.
Is there any advantage to being hosted in the same country as my targeted traffic?
Yes! Some search engines, like Google, will use the location of a website in its algorithm to determine what website should be displayed in the top 10 links. It is unlikely, that someone Googling “hosting” at Google.com.au will get a website located outside of Australia as the top link. Other factors contribute to a website’s likeliness of being displayed in the top 10 links on Google, and it is not based solely on what country the website is hosted in.
What does SEO mean?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is a term given to methods of modifying or tweaking a website to make it easier for a search engine spider to crawl, and to increase the chances of your website being displayed in the top 10 results on Search Engines for specific search terms. This can include doubling up on links, rewording text on a website to include a keyword more than it may have been required, and to build “back-links”, or websites that link to your website. There are many other ways to optimise ones website to get a higher ranking in search engines.
What is a domain name or a FQDN?
A domain name in reference to websites is a name of a website used to access the website instead of using the website server’s IP Address. A FQDN or Fully Qualified Domain Name refers to a domain name out side of a local area network or VPN which is usable by the whole world. It is a more technical term for Domain Name. For example, oscs.com.au is a FQDN, but server.local is not. Domain names are also referred to as being the website address or URL.
